Are you kidding me?!?!
The following is a proposed law in North Carolina, filed on March 17, 2021.
2021?!?!?!
Yes...2021
I've pasted the proposed law language below, and included my own commentary regarding WHY we should be incredibly concerned about the following two things: 1) This specific proposed law in North Carolina; and 2) The many instances of white/colonizer backlash that we are seeing across the country (and globe) right now.
Why do we see this type of backlash (or, as I often call it: "White Rage") throughout our American history?
Black American progress runs counter to the myth of American exceptionalism. And, as Mark Charles (@wirelesshogan) put it so eloquently:
"American exceptionalism is the coping mechanism for a nation in deep denial of its genocidal past and its current racist reality."
Let's DIVE IN...
H 324 (2021) ENSURING DIGNITY & NONDISCRIMINATION/SCHOOLS. (NEW) Filed Mar 17 2021, AN ACT TO DEMONSTRATE THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY'S INTENT THAT STUDENTS, TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS, AND OTHER SCHOOL EMPLOYEES RECOGNIZE THE EQUALITY AND RIGHTS OF ALL PERSONS AND TO PROHIBIT PUBLIC SCHOOL UNITS FROM PROMOTING CERTAIN CONCEPTS THAT ARE CONTRARY TO THAT INTENT. Prohibits public school units from promoting seven specified belief concepts as follows: (1) one race or sex is inherently superior to another race or sex;
Exactly...that's correct. Except, the false belief that white males are inherently superior is in the DNA of America. That's exactly why we need to dismantle this false narrative systemically. (2) an individual, solely by virtue of his or her race or sex, is inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously;
Whoa...defensive much? Are you saying that the hundreds of scholars (of all races) that have researched and written about the damages of white supremacy culture are wrong?
(3) an individual should be discriminated against or receive adverse treatment solely or partly because of his or her race or sex;
Right...this is what we are trying to dismantle with anti-racism education in schools. Because, today, BIPOC ARE being discriminated against. (4) an individual's moral character is necessarily determined by his or her race or sex;
Agree...except when you live in America, this IS what is happening. There is still a false narrative ingrained in our psyche (and at one point "proven" by racist science) that says: whiteness is pure and moral. And, Blackness is immoral, dirty. (5) an individual, solely by virtue of his or her race or sex, bears responsibility for actions committed in the past by other members of the same race or sex;
Again...defensive much? We aren't just talking about actions committed in the past. We are talking about the founding of America on the stolen land of the Indigenous Peoples and the stolen labor of Africans/African Americans, and how that hierarchy has never gone away. That across all outcomes (health, education, etc.), racial disparities today are as bad, if not worse, than the 1960's. We all hold a responsibility to ask ourselves: WTF?! And, then DO something about it. (6) any individual, solely by virtue of his or her race or sex, should feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress; and
I'm going to call a spade a spade. This is absolutely a mind f**k. So...for over 400 years, Black folks and IPOC folks have endured discomfort, guilt, anguish, death, torture, psychological distress (google post traumatic slave syndrome and epigenetics), and now...in 2021...as a reaction to an amazing opportunity to integrate anti-racism education in schools...you feel the need to name this explicitly as a way to protect white folks?? Except, you don't directly name your intent to protect white folks. Instead, you disguise it with a colorblind mentality: "any individual". I just can't.
(7) the belief that the United States is a meritocracy is racist or sexist or was created by members of a particular race or sex to oppress members of another race or sex.
Except we have tons and tons of data that proves that meritocracy is a myth...so... Oh, and meritocracy WAS created by white men. F**k the patriarchy.
Defines promote to include three types of actions: (1) compelling students or school employees to affirm or profess the seven described belief concepts;
Brainwashing at its finest...nothing new here. (2) including the described belief concepts in educational or professional settings in a way that reasonably appears to sponsor, approve or endorse them; or
This is scary. We all should be VERY concerned about this. (3) contracting, hiring, or engaging persons for the purpose of advocating the described belief concepts. Specifies that the statute does not prohibit constitutionally protected speech; individually accessing materials that advocate the described belief concepts for research or independent study; or stating the described belief concepts or assigning materials that incorporate such concepts for educational purposes in contexts that make clear the public school unit does not sponsor, approve, or endorse such concepts or...
This is explicitly saying, "don't hire race equity consultants". This is VERY scary. And, this isn't about the money. This is about the fact that this bill is proposing to SILENCE us. This bill is proposing the opposite of free speech.
